The Clan Codes

Greater Codes

  1. Remain loyal to your clan and your clanmates.

  2. Do not hunt or trespass on another group's territory. Your clan's boundaries must be checked and marked daily.

  3. No one can neglect a kit or apprentice in pain or in danger, even if they are from a rival group.

  4. Cats must not kill each other unless it is necessary for self-defense.

  5. A Gathering of all local groups is held at the full moon during a truce that lasts for the night.

  6. The word of the leader is clan law unless it goes against the Codes or the clan disagrees.

Lesser Codes

  1. Those who are elderly, are nursing, or are sick or injured must be fed first.

  2. Prey is killed only to be eaten.

  3. A cat must be at least six moons old to become an apprentice.

The Deputy Codes

  1. A cat cannot be made deputy without having mentored at least one apprentice or raised at least one litter.

  2. The deputy will become the clan's leader when the previous leader retires, dies, or is exiled.

  3. After the retirement, death, or exile of the previous deputy, a new deputy must be chosen before moonhigh.

The Medicine Cat Codes

  1. Medicine cats must not show favor or disfavor to anyone, even to family or cats from other groups.

  2. Medicine cats cannot hasten the deaths of their patients unless the patient specifically requests it with the leader and at least one warrior as witnesses.

  3. There must be at least one other fully-trained medicine cat if a medicine cat wishes to try for kits.

Clan Laws

  1. The leader and/or deputy will make important announcements from the Speaker's Tree.

  2. All apprentices will be taken to the Moonpool to receive guidance from their ancestors before taking their final assessments.

  3. Nursing deputies will choose a warrior who will convey their commands to the rest of the clan. The deputy can resume their role any time after their kits are weaned.

  4. Murder is cause for the death penalty, which is done via poison or the Leader's Justice. Conspiracy to murder is cause for exile.
